Empty white-sand beach and palm at Mexico Beach, Florida
Can you drive on the beach in Mexico Beach?

Beach driving is not allowed anywhere in Mexico Beach, and no permit exists that allows it. Only city, emergency and ADA vehicles are exempt.

The rule

No vehicles on the sand, anywhere in city limits.

It is unlawful to operate a motor vehicle on the sand beach area between the Gulf of Mexico and the coastal construction control line anywhere within Mexico Beach city limits.
“Vehicle” is defined broadly: cars, trucks, ATVs, and anything else carried on wheels, runners, or a cushion of air all count. There is no permit process that allows a resident, property owner, or visitor to get around this.

Penalty (§ 10.99): Up to $500, up to 60 days in jail, or both. Each day a violation continues can count as a separate offense.

Who is exempt

Four narrow exceptions. None for the public.

Section 73.02 carves out exceptions for specific city-approved or emergency situations.
01
City work vehicles moving beach equipment via a designated public access point
02
Beach-cleaning and wildlife-monitoring vehicles operated at public expense
03
Ambulances, law enforcement and beach patrol vehicles
04
ADA-compliant beach wheelchairs for persons with an ambulatory disability
